Viking Sagas

Friday 30th May 2014
in the BP Lecture Theatre at the British Museum
Great Russell Street, London, WC1B 3DG
from 6.30pm for a 7pm start

Poet in the City presents an event exploring the rich and fascinating history of the Icelandic Sagas.

As inspiration for countless works of art and as an ongoing source of imaginative fuel for contemporary poets and poetry, the sagas remain one of the richest resources in literary history.

Come and experience these iconic poems performed live in the heart of the British Museum, while upstairs a longboat sits among the armour and riches of the Vikings themselves. Celebrated Icelandic poet and author Gerdur Kristny will be joined by experts in Viking literature and heritage.

Part of the British Museum's BP Exhibition Vikings: life and legend.

Gerdur Kristny

won the Icelandic Literature Awards 2010 for her book of poetry Blóðhófnir (Bloodhoof) which is based on an ancient Nordic myth. Gerdur has published collections of poetry and short stories, novels, books for children and a biography, for which she received The Icelandic Journalism Award in 2005. Gerdur's play, The Dancing at Bessastadir, based on two of her children's books, premiered in the Icelandic National Theatre in Reykjavik in February 2011.

DR Emily Letherbridge

holds a PhD in Old Norse-Icelandic language and literature from the University of Cambridge. She is currently a post-doctoral researcher at the University of Iceland. She is writing a book on the Icelandic sagas, due to be published by Crymogea in 2015.

Gareth Williams

is curator at the British Museum responsibility for British and European coinage, about AD 500 to about 1180. Within this area he specialises in Anglo-Saxon and Viking coinage. His wider research includes the history of the British Isles and Scandinavia in the early Middle Ages, and the history and archaeology of the Vikings.
