The June recital of our ever-popular 'Enescu Concerts' Series, featuring viola da gamba player Anca Iarosevici and classic guitarist Bogdan Mihailescu, exalts the marvellous baroque tradition of the 17th and 18th centuries. The event offers, alongside works by Vivaldi, Purcell and Handel, a double premiere: the first-time performance in London of Enescu's 'Andante Religioso' and the mysterious 'Codex Cajoni' by Ioan Caianu (1629-1687), a Transylvanian monk born in Wallachia. more

The 'Marin Preda Season' of the Romanian Cinematheque at RCI London revisits some of the best screen adaptations of the great writer's works culminating with an evening of superlative cinema with director Stere Gulea, the author of the unsurpassed film adaptation of 'The Morometes' (1987), and the opening of the photographic exhibition, 'Marin Preda: A life in pictures and books', a revealing incursion into the creative process of both a literary masterpiece and a great film. more

THE MOROMETES GO DIGITAL
Unanimously considered an instant classic from the very beginning, the saga of the Morometes has enjoyed a wide international circulation thanks to its numerous translations. To mark the jubilee, the Romanian Cultural Institute is proud to bring some of the its memorable scenes to the digital age as an invitation to discover the whole version of the 1957 English translation, hosted in the vaults of the British Library. The event will be accompanied by a conversation on Marin Preda's legacy in Romania and Britain, featuring writer and academic Caius Dobrescu and renowned thespian Jack Klaff. more

In a tour de force of dramatic flair and supreme acting skills, legendary stage and film actors Marcel Iures ('Mission: Impossible', BBC's 'The Game', 'Pirates of the Caribbean') and George Mihaita ('Reconstruction', 'The Silent Wedding'), under the direction of stage virtuoso Alexandru Dabija, revive the colourful world of the Morometes in a production imbibed in the ancestral wit, mischievous humour and ultimately tragic outlook of the archetypal Romanian peasant. We are pleased to support the screening of 'Toto and His Sisters', Alexander Nanau's touching observational film already awarded at Jihlava International Documentary Film Festival, Leipzig DOK Festival and Zurich Film Festival. CINEMA AS REDEMPTION: 'CHUCK NORRIS VS COMMUNISM' AT EIFF 2015
The 2015 edition of Edinburgh International Film Festival, the world's oldest continually running film festival, features the European premiere of 'Chuck Norris vs Communism', a documentary about the redemptive power of film in times of political and social distress. With the support of the RCI, the event is attended by director Ilinca Calugareanu together with translator and film critic Irina Nistor, whose voice, which dubbed innumerable foreign films during the harsh Romanian 80's, became a herald of emancipation. more
PREDA ON SCREEN: 'THE MOST BELOVED OF EARTHLINGS' The 'Marin Preda Season' of our Romanian Cinematheque continues with 'The Most Beloved of Earthlings' (1993) by Serban Marinescu. A grueling story of survival and salvation, the film revolves around the confession of a promising intellectual and lecturer in philosophy, Victor Petrini, whose life is crushed after he is arrested on false accusations of espionage by the repressive secret police of the communist regime.
