The Corneliu M Popescu Prize 2011 for Poetry Translated from a European Language into English
Prize: £1,500; Closing date: 31 May 2011

The Corneliu M Popescu Prize (awarded every other year) is organised by The Poetry Society and sponsored by The Ratiu Foundation. The prize is awarded biennially by the Poetry Society for a volume of poetry translated from a European language into English.
The first Award was given in 1983. Formerly the European Poetry Translation Prize (1983-1997) the Prize was relaunched in 2003, and renamed in memory of the young Romanian translator Corneliu M Popescu. Corneliu, who translated the work of one of Romania’s leading poets, Mihai Eminescu, into English, died in an earthquake in 1977, aged 19. The Prize’s founding sponsor in the early 1980s was Romanian journalist, author and democracy campaigner Ion Ratiu. It has been supported by the Ratiu Foundation since 2003.
ENTRY DETAILS
• A prize of £1500 will be awarded to the translator of a volume of poetry translated from a European language into English and published between 1 June 2009 and 31 May 2011.
• The closing date for submissions is 31 May 2011.
• Three copies of each book should be sent to
Corneliu M Popescu Prize, The Poetry Society, 22 Betterton Street, London, WC2H 9BX, UK.
Each submission must be accompanied by an entry form (photocopies permissible). You can download it from the Poetry Society’s website.
• Submissions can be made by the publisher, translator or poet. Self-published work is ineligible.
• By submitting a volume, the copyright holder grants the Poetry Society the unrestricted non-exclusive right to perform/broadcast/publish one poem from the volume, when the winner is announced or up to twelve months afterwards, in order to publicise the winning entry.
• The winner will be announced by 6 November 2011 on the Poetry Society website, and celebrated at the Aldeburgh Poetry Festival 2011.
• The judges’ decision will be final.

2011 JUDGES: JANE DRAYCOTT & SASHA DUGDALE
JANE DRAYCOTT’s translation of the medieval dream-elegy Pearl is published this year by Carcanet/OxfordPoets. Her translations of Old and Middle English poetry won Stephen Spender prizes in 2008 and 2010. Jane was named a Next Generation poet by the PBS, and has won the Keats-Shelley Prize. Her collections include The Night Tree and Prince Rupert’s Drop (Oxford Poets) and Tideway and Christina the Astonishing (with Lesley Saunders) from Two Rivers Press. Her most recent collection Over was shortlisted for the 2009 T.S. Eliot Prize. She teaches at the University of Oxford and Lancaster University.
SASHA DUGDALE is a poet and translator. She worked for the British Council in Russia in the 1990s where she set up the Russian New Writing Project with the Royal Court Theatre. Since her return in 2001 she has translated new plays for theatres including the Court, the RSC and other companies. She has published two collections of translations of Russian poetry, of which the most recent, Birdsong on the Seabed(Bloodaxe) by Elena Shvarts was a PBS Choice and shortlisted for the Popescu and Academica Rossica Translation Awards. A third collection of her own poems The Red House is published by Carcanet in August 2011.

THE RATIU FOUNDATION
The Ratiu Foundation was established in London in 1979 by Ion and Elisabeth Ratiu to promote and support projects which further education and research in the culture and history of Romania . The foundation offers grants to Romanian students studying a wide range of subjects in the UK , principally for projects, postgraduate courses, conference participations, travel grants, and other short term courses including academic research. They enable talented graduates and young professionals to become familiar with the UK and gain skills, which they can adapt and apply in Romania . The Ratiu Foundation offers annual seed funding for innovative projects, principally in Romania , which foster Romanian arts and civilisation, heritage, civil society, democracy and environmental protection.

STARPRESS 2011


Iniţiativa scriitoarei Ligya Diaconescu şi a revistei STARPRESS , romano - canado-americane , în colaborare cu Andrada Victoria Diaconescu, de a publica "ANTOLOGIA scriitorilor români contemporani din întreaga lume", a izvorât din dorinţa de a face cunoscute cercurilor iubitoare de cultură, şi nu numai, din întreaga lume, scriitori români trăitori pe meridianele lumii. Lucrarea apărută în format A4, cuprinde 52 de poeţi şi prozatori, în 225 de pagini, cu creaţii scrise în limba română, dar traduse şi în limba engleză.Parafrazând pe Eugen Lovinescu pot spune că cei cuprinşi în această amplă lucrare nu sunt numai talente remarcabile, ci şi puncte din frontiera hărţii noastre sufleteşti.

Această antologie a apăut şi urmare "Concursului Internaţional de Poezie " pentru românii din întreaga lume-"STARPRESS ", iniţiat de Ligya Diaconescu din România şi George Filip din Montreal, aşa cum ne informează poetul în "Cuvânt înainte ".

Tot ca o prefaţare a acestei ample lucrări, scriitoarea Cezarina Adamescu ( redactor la Agero, Stuttgart, Germania ) subliniază că această antologie este o"Călătorie prin patria neasemuită a cuvintelor ", în timp ce Adalbert Gyuris( Germania) spune că lucrările publicate sunt"Gânduri alese ", iar cunoscutul scriitor Octavian Curpaş din Phoenix (Arizona ) detailează rolul amplei lucrări, spunând că ea este" o şansă la universalitate pentru autorii români ai timpului nostru ", ca Lucreţia Berzintu ( Israel) să conchidă că Ligya Diaconescu "a creat acest buchet de flori de pretutindeni ".

Fiecarui autor cuprins în antologie i se rezervă patru pagini în care sunt publicate datele biobibliografice, fotografia şi creaţiile, în limba română şi în engleză.

Urmare faptului că poetul clujan Al.Florin Ţene, preşedintele Legii Scriitorilor Români, a câştigat Marele Premiu la Concursul Internaţional STARPRESS, antologia se deschide cu fişa bio-biobliografică a acestuia şi cu patru poeme în limba română şi engleză. O altă personalitate reprezentativă a literaturii noastre din diasporă este poetul George Roca, membru al Ligii Scriitorilor, stabilit în Australia, prin poeziile cuprinse în această antologie, pot spune că este un martir al talentului.Lumina din poeziile Victoriei Duţu stabileşte o analogie între două structure lirice, între spiritual postmodern şi cel globmodern. Cunoscutul poet din SUA, Virgil Ciucă ştie să împletească armonios inteligenţa artistică cu ceremonia lirică.O poetă a vibraţiilor luminii sudului este Elisabeta Iosif, în poeziile căreia anotimpurile sunt simboluri ale iubirii şi ale renaşterii spirituale. Lică Pavel dospeşte verbul în versuri scurte, concentrate, ele fiind oglinda unde"Omul care mă priveşte îmi seamănă leit ".Versurile semnate de Carmen Tania Grigore sunt expresii ale eului frisonat de dragoste.

Poemele semnate de Marin Ifrim sunt adevărate acumulări de detalii în care se răsfrâng clipele aşteptării. Adalbert Gyuris (Germania ) îşi exteriorizează sentimentele prin plasticitatea şi coloratura cuvintelor, în timp ce din Baia Mare poeta Mariana Angela Glodici îşi aprinde "Făclia de dor " pentru a lumina "cu speranţa cea mai curată" destinul.Un poet laborios este Damian Theodor (New York ) în versurile căruia descoperim metafore ce inched o premoniţie adâncă. Mariana Zavati Gardner(Anglia ) este o poetă a amintirilor unde pactul autobiografic, autoreferenţialitatea poemului sunt introduse într-un scenariu nostalgic. Micropoemele lui Adrian Botez sunt adevărate clic-clacuri ale unui aparat fotografiat ce surprinde clipa de lumină. O metamorfoză a anotimpurilor nuanţează poezia lui Victor Burde, în timp ce Mariana Doina Leonte îşi ascultă tăcerea poemelor sale.

Un poet profund este Menuţ Maximinian dotat cu capacitatea de a da carnaţie obsesiilor şi a sentimentelor. Visul evaziv al Mihaelei Cristescu (Sydney-Australia ) transcende dincolo de realitate prin plasticitatea imaginilor, pe când acest fenomen îl găsim şi la Cristina Gabriele Nemeş dar încorsetat în frumoase poeme scrise în stil clasic.Implicarea eului în "conflictul " dintre anotimp şi persoanele iubite din versurile semnate de Elena Olariu dă o notă de sinceritate. Gustul pentru rememorarea histrionică îl descoperim la Alex Popa ( Anglia), acelaşi lucru străbate şi poeziile Ionelei Flood (London-England ). În versuri scrise în stil clasic Gigi Stanciu decantează gânduri cu o voluptate irepresibilă. Iar poeziile semnate de Cristiana Maria Purdescu, Gheorghe Mizgan, Sorin Micuţiu, Silvia Petre-Grigore, Ioana Geier( Germania), Marian Dragomir, Olga Alexandra Diaconu, Ionela Van Rees Zota( Germania), Eliza Floria, Ana Maria Gîbu, Maya Maria Muşat, Monalisa Livia Gheorghiu alternează subtil spectacolul ingenuu şi tonul romantic.

O poetă cunoscătoare excelentă a poeziei este Ligya Diaconescu, sedusă fiind de himera clasicităţii.O voluptate irepresibilă a rostirii şi o dicţie impecabilă împing poezia Ligyei Diaconescu către discursul muzical în care par a se fi strâns cele mai incitante ritmuri în armonie cu trăirile egoului. Clasicismul prozodic al versurilor e însă mai degrabă o formă de îmblânzire a convulsiilor lăuntrice, un act de exorcism. Poemele freamătă de sensibilitatea unei poete admirabilă. Aceaşi seducţie pentru versul clasic o descoperim la Lavinia Huţişoru Dumitru.

Această amplă antologie se încheie cu proze semnate de Elena Buică (Toronto, Canada ), Radu Botiş, Cezarina Adamescu, Adrian Botez, Liliana Moldovan, Ovidiu Creangă,( Toronto, Canada), Daniela Gîfu, Dora Alina Romanescu, Radu Vasile Chialda, Victoria Fătu Nalaţiu, Menuţ Maximinian şi Camelia Iuliana Radu, texte ce evidenţiază starea actuală şi diversă a prozei româneşti unde urmele biografiei, rememorarea, punerea în oglindă a depoziţiilor, introspecţia, radiografia unor destine angrenate în circuitul social al vieţii, cu toate complicaţiile pe care le presupune, sunt doar o parte din evantaiul multicolor al ideilor ce se desprind din aceste proze.

Această antologie, realizată cu profesionalism de Ligya Diaconescu, se constituie într-un barometru care indică punctele din frontiera hărţii noastre sufleteşti, cum scria Eugen Lovinescu. Lucrările cuprinse în această antologie reprezintă perenitatea talentului românului indiferent pe ce meridian al planetei se află.

Cultural association “Manifest” is launching the third edition of the international poetry contest “Art Attack”.

Cultural association “Manifest” is launching the third edition of the international poetry contest “Art Attack”. The festival uses engaged literature as a form with the possibility of affecting public opinion and introducing positive changes in the society. After two successful editions, the festival has spread across over twenty different countries around the world and was recognized by numerous cultural institutions in Croatia and abroad.


This year’s topic is “children”. The contest is open for authors up to 30 years of age who send their works (max 3 poems) in Croatian and/or English to the e-addressart.attack.fest@gmail.com. Closing date is March 15th, 2011.


The jury will choose 15 works which will be published in a bilingual poetry collection. Together with their works, authors are asked to send basic information about themselves: name and surname, date and country of birth as well as a short biography. Authors will be notified about the results by the end of March, 2011.


The festival will last for one week and will include events such as: presentation of the poetry collection, poetry readings, meetings with the awarded poets, children workshops, theatre plays and films as well as presentations of organisations participating in the project.


Awarded authors will be invited to participate in the events in Zagreb, Split and Šibenik in June 2011.
